Guild Members Casting Historic Ballots in Dayton

July 30, 2012

Dayton Guild members have just a few more hours to vote in their historic election for a new contract –- a quarter-century after they negotiated their last contract.

Voting began at 9 a.m. and continues until 9 p.m. Dayton President Lou Grieco said copy editors, who are now part of a separate bargaining unit, are serving as election tellers, with members casting ballots at the copy desk.

About 55 people are represented by the main bargaining unit, with about 40 eligible voters. The open-shop unit grew steadily as the local intensified its long fight for a fair contract, and is growing still. After the tentative agreement was reached July 17, Grieco said, “one guy shook my hand and handed me a card (to join) and another card was waiting for me on my desk.”
