It's a sure bet that anyone who came to the Buffalo Newspaper Guild’s leadership skills training course June 22-24 walked away impressed and changed in some way. Called “Re-Imagining Leadership,” the program offered an intense, immersive experience that used participatory exercises to move from theories of leadership to practical and fresh ways to solve the challenging issues facing Guild locals – everything from engaging members to recruiting new leaders to improving union solidarity.
The event, which was organized by Buffalo staff representative Tammy Turnbull, attracted 15 people from seven locals, and representatives of The Newspaper Guild and its Sector Executive Council. Barbara Saxberg, national director of education for the Canadian Media Guild, created and conducted the course, which was held in cooperation with the Great Lakes District Council and TNG.
“The course challenged us to reconsider how we think about leadership, and gave us solutions we can use. It surpassed all our expectations,” said Henry Davis, president of the Buffalo local.
