Nearly 70 Guild-represented reporters and editors at the New York Times formed a silent gauntlet Wednesday morning outside the company’s annual shareholders meeting, letting a banner and sign do the talking: “Without Us, It’s Just White Space.”
The newsroom employees lined up in the lobby of the Times building in midtown Manhattan and handed out leaflets that featured a highly critical analysis of the company’s position during 13 months of bargaining. The analysis was written by Times’ labor reporter Steven Greenhouse.
New York Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., other Sulzberger family members and other Times executives were forced to walk past the lined-up staffers. Local leaders say members are getting angrier by the day about the lack of progress on a fair contract and the company's continuing demands for a 10 to 15 percent cut in compensation – demands made while handing a $24 million severance package to a departing CEO.
