Guild Members Win Big at 2011 Sigma Delta Chi Awards

From newspapers big and small, Guild journalists are once again among the top winners of SPJ’s Sigma Delta Chi Awards:

Matt Lakin, Local 33076, Knoxville News Sentinel for “Pill Sick,” covering the epidemic of prescription drug abuse in East Tennessee. Category: Non-deadline reporting, circulation 50,0001-100,000.

Raquel Rutledge, Rick Barrett, John Diedrich, Local 34041, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for “Shattered Trust,” about deadly bacterial infections caused by contaminated medical products that were supposed to be sterile. Category: Investigative reporting, circulation above 100,001.

Mark Stodghill and Brandon Stahl, Local 37008, Duluth News Tribune for “The Case of Dr. Konasiewicz,” about a highly paid doctor’s long list of malpractice suits and allegations of unprofessional conduct. Category: Investigative reporting, circulation below 50,000.

Paul Grondahl and Cindy Schultz, Local 31034, Albany Times Union for an in-depth special report on transgender issues. Category: Feature reporting, circulation 50,001 to 100,000.

Damian Paletta, Local 1096, Wall Street Journal for “Disabled System,” about the complicated system of justice in the arena of Social Security disability benefits. Category: Washington Correspondence

Sally Jenkins, Local 32035, The Washington Post for sports column writing at papers above 100,001 circulation.

In addition to the individual Guild winners, staff at the Washington Post won for "Breakaway Wealth" in the non-deadline reporting category for papers over 100,001 circulation, and staff at the Wall Street Journal won for "The End of Privacy," for public service journalism at papers above 100,001 circulation.
