It’s Official: New Republic Workers Go Guild

April 25, 2018 – One week after an overwhelming majority of editorial employees of The New Republic signed on to a union organizing effort last week, management of the publication voluntarily recognized the New York Local of The NewsGuild-CWA as the workers’ collective bargaining representative.

“Now that TNR’s management has agreed to our demand for representation, we all look forward to negotiating a contract that reflects our progressive values,” the organizing committee said in a statement.

The staff of the 104-year-old magazine is the latest in a growing movement of journalists who are seeking union representation. Last week employees at the Chicago Tribune announced a union organizing campaign and since January journalists at the L.A. Times, the Missoula Independent, the Casper Star-Tribune and Mic have mounted successful campaigns.
