The journalists of the Miami Herald, el Nuevo Herald and Miami.com took a major step Oct. 2 toward forming a union. Organizers say they are seeking “to preserve the award-winning journalism produced at one of Florida’s most respected newsrooms.”

Reporters, photographers, copy editors, page designers, producers, translators, and growth editors from the three Herald publications signed cards indicating support for One Herald Guild, a new unit of The NewsGuild-CWA.

“Among those committed to the effort are seasoned journalists who have brought the joy of Pulitzer Prizes to the newsroom, and rookie reporters whose passionate pursuit of journalism serves as an inspiring reminder to their colleagues. Together, they represent a mosaic of the communities they cover,” organizers wrote in a press release.

I have known Bernie Lunzer for more than three decades, and if I were still a working Guild member with a vote, it would definitely be cast for him. I do not know his challenger, but have read his statements, and have been following Guild news regarding the election. Bernie is not to blame for the problems with the initial balloting, and pointing the finger at him is unfair. More importantly, during this time of growth and challenges for the Guild, voting for a rookie with no experience running a local - let alone a national union - is not going to move the union forward. My fear is that without Bernie at the helm, all the hard work he and many other dedicated Guild leaders and members have done for years will be wiped out — when his challenger’s inexperience at the bargaining table and beyond becomes apparent. Experience counts, as does hard work and decades of dedication to the membership. Keep that in mind when you cast your vote. x Retired member and former local rep, Linda Frediani.

NewsGuild Region 2 Vice President Sheila Lindsay stepped down from the Executive Council Sept. 20, following her resignation from employment with the American Nurses Association.

“The Executive Council joins the Guild membership in thanking Sheila for her dedicated and thoughtful service,” Executive Vice President Marian Needham wrote in a memo to local officers.

In accordance with the Guild Constitution, Region 2 locals may nominate members to fill the vacant position, Needham announced. The Executive Council will vote to fill the position from among the nominations it receives.

Thank you everyone for your kind words and it has truly been a pleasure to have served with each of you. Thank you, may there be continued succes to our union and the labor movement as a whole.

It's been a pleasure knowing you. My first encounter with you was in Maryland at the Maritime and I had to read our locals report. Was a bit nervous and you smiled and gave me the thumbs up when I finished. Will miss seeing your face and catching up.

Sheila has fought for dignity and inclusion in her work on the board. Perhaps more than any other board member she always was concerned that everyone was valued and heard. Thank you Sheila!

What a loss for the Guild! Best of luck to you, Sheila!

Sheila is a true hero. Thank you for your service, and thank you for being who you are.

Sad news, but wishing all the best to friend Sheila, 🌹❤️
