2009 David S. Barr Award Announcement

The Newspaper Guild-CWA announces the David S. Barr Award for student journalists in high school and college.

The David S. Barr Award is intended to recognize one high school and one college student for their journalistic achievement and to encourage young journalists to focus on issues of social justice. It is named after David S. Barr, who for a quarter of a century served as The Newspaper Guild's general counsel, mentor, role model and institutional memory.

More specifically, the goals of the award are:

 

  • To provide inspiration for a younger generation of journalists by recognizing work which contributes to the pursuit of justice and fairness;

  • To promote issues of importance to all working people;

  • To serve as a lasting memorial to David S. Barr, in tribute to his work and teachings.

All entries must be of work published or broadcast between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2009 that helped to right a wrong; corrected an injustice; or promoted justice and fairness. The awards will be presented July 22, 2010, at the annual Freedom Award Celebration in Washington, D.C. Barr winners will be provided with transportation and hotel lodging to attend the event.

  • Deadline: Entries must be postmarked no later than Jan. 29, 2010 andmust have a clearly legible return address on the package. Entries posted after Jan. 29 will be discarded.

  • The awards competition is open to all high school students, including those enrolled in vocational, technical or special education programs; and to all part-time or full-time college students, including those in community colleges and in graduate programs.

  • The amount of the Award is $500 for the high school student winner and $1,500 for the college student winner.

  • No more than one entry per contestant is permitted. Included with the entry should be a brief summary of the work submitted. One original copy of the entry as published or broadcast must be submitted with four photocopies. Failure to supply all required documents will result in ineligibility. A signed official application form (click here) must be attached to each copy of the entry.

  • Judging will be conducted in Washington, D.C. by a four-member panel, including a journalist, an academic, a labor lawyer and a member of the Barr family.

  • All entries become the property of the awards committee.
