Coalition of Labor Union Women Condemns Akin Remarks

The Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW) issued a news release Tuesday expressing "outrage at the sexist and demeaning remarks by Congressman Akin referring to 'legitimate rape.' This is one more example of the war on women and it will not be tolerated." CLUW President Karen J. See said women should use the remarks "as a galvanizing moment to push for increased voter registration particularly among young women and encourage union women to run for office."

CWA: Supreme Court Decision Is 'Big Victory for 99 Percent'

Shortly after this morning's Supreme Court ruling upholding the major provisions of President Obama's Affordable Care Act, CWA leaders called it a "big victory for the 99 percent," and said, "The Obama administration worked to bring together all the parties in our current system: consumers, insurers, providers, health care facilities, and employers. Congress held lengthy debates and difficult votes. The Affordable Care Act is an important first step toward true health care reform." Unions Backing Pregnant Workers Fairness Act

Unions and allies, led by the AFL-CIO and the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW), are backing proposed legislation to strengthen the Pregnancy Discrimination Act. “What you expect when you’re pregnant should not include expecting to lose your job,” said Naomi Walker, AFL-CIO’s director of state and local affairs.
