The Guild-represented Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News have shared a building for decades. Now their joint owner is announcing plans for them to share news coverage. Earlier this week, the company announced it will cut 37 jobs as it pursues a "One Newsroom" strategy.

Receiving the 2012 First Amendment Award from the New England First Amendment Coalition, Boston Globe editor Marty Baron warned the press against fear and timidity. In a powerful speech, he said too many news organizations "are holding back, out of fear — fear that we will be saddled with an uncomfortable political label, fear that we will be accused of bias, fear that we will be portrayed as negative, fear that we will lose customers, fear that advertisers will run from us, fear that we will be assailed as anti-this or anti-that, fear that we will offend someone, anyone. Fear, in short, that our weakened financial condition will be made weaker because we did something strong and right, because we simply told the truth and told it straight."

As digital sources of information have exploded—and the lines among reporter, analyst, columnist, and provocateur have blurred—the NCAA has taken a harder stance against some writers. Lately those exchanges have gotten personal, with NCAA representatives referring to some journalists as "lame," "dumb," "pseudo-journos," and "bad ones."
