In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly declared May 3 as World Press Freedom Day, a day to celebrate, evaluate and defend the media's freedom globally, and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in pursuit of their profession. In a statement about World Press Freedom Day 2012, the UN Secretary-General and UNESCO Director-General expressed grave concern about journalists' safety, and recognized that many non-traditional journalists are at risk, too. "As media moves online, more online journalists, including bloggers are being harassed, attacked and killed for their work. They must receive the same protection as traditional media workers," they said. Read more of the statement and find a wealth of other information on the UNESCO World Press Freedom Day website.
