In a fascinating column, Potts revisits a memo written 20 years ago by the then-new managing editor of The Washington Post, Robert G. Kaiser. The memo sprung from Kaiser's trip to the newly developing Silicon Valley, where Apple's CEO invited him to conference in Japan about the future of digital media. "What Kaiser heard at the conference sounded to him—a decidedly non-techie print newsman whose expertise was mostly in international affairs—like science fiction," Potts writes, calling the resulting memo, "a striking document, even today... It shows a first-class mind wrapping itself around a topic -- and a future -- that was completely new and foreign."

In "The Scoop" column, word is that George Norcross, one of the new owners of Philadelphia's newspapers, wants to gain access to the helipad atop the papers' offices "to ease his commute from South Jersey to Center City, for which he currently employs a driver." Norcross and other owners are seeking $28 million in staffing and other rollbacks. The Guild, whose contract doesn't expire until October 2013, has told them to take a hike. Top editors at The Red & Black, the independent student newspaper at the University of Georgia, have quit in protest over concerns about students’ editorial authority over the paper’s content. “For years, students have had final approval of the paper followed by a critique by the adviser only after articles were published,” former Editor-in-chief Polina Marinova wrote on a blog the editors set up. “However, from now on, that will not be the case.”
