Once a month, a free print publication is delivered to mailboxes, coffee shops and libraries across the Mid-Atlantic with the latest news about how the government and private sector are trying to protect the Chesapeake Bay. The Chesapeake Bay Journal looks like any other newspaper, but there’s one catch: its chief financial bakcer is also one of its frequently covered subjects: the federal government’s Environmental Protection Agency.

Doug Manchester, the U-T San Diego publisher who calls himself "Papa Doug," now owns both of San Diego County's major daily newspapers, striking a deal this week to pay $11.95 million for the 75,000-circulation North County Times. "The purchase consolidates the county's two daily newspapers under the control of Manchester, a hotelier who built a reputation for being egomaniacal, litigious and unrelenting while developing San Diego's downtown waterfront in the 1980s. Since buying the U-T in late 2011, he hasn't hesitated to use its news and opinion pages as a bullhorn for his conservative political interests and a bludgeon for attacking opponents," Davis writes.

The Kickstarter campaign launched in August to save Homicide Watch DC has worked, and the couple who created the site say they now have enough money to hire two or three interns to run it during the fall semester.
