Journalists covering crime and other stories in Oakland, Calif., are being robbed of expensive cameras, sometimes at gunpoint.  In less than a year, every major television news station in the Bay Area has been a victim, some more than once. One newspaper photographer has lost five cameras. In the most brazen episode, a group of men punched a KPIX-TV cameraman last November while he was filming at midday in front of an Oakland high school. The robbers fled with his camera while it was still recording. Viewers saw the reporter sign off and then an inexplicably wobbly image.

John Sullivan, who helped lead a Philadelphia Inquirer team to a Pulitzer Prize with an examination of school violence, will join both The Washington Post and American University in May. Sullivan’s position at the Post will be underwritten by a half-million-dollar grant the Ford Foundation announced last summer it would give the Post for government-accountability reporting. Last year, with grant funds, the Post hired Mike Sallah from the Miami Herald, Kimbriell Kelly from the Chicago Reporter and Amy Brittain from the Newark Star Ledger.

The editor of an independent news website was removed by police from the council chambers of Cornwall, Ontario, on Monday night, after the mayor objected to the man's T-shirt, which had a picture of the mayor's face on a milk carton, part of a protest campaign against an alleged conflict of interest. As recorded, Gilcig speaks very calmly with the police officer escorting him out, arguing that he's violated no laws and that the mayor didn't have the authority to throw him out. "I'm doing my job as a journalist," he says. "There's nothing illegal about this shirt."

The Tribune Company has hired investment banks to weigh a sale of its top newspapers, including The Chicago Tribune, The Baltimore Sun and The Los Angeles Times, the media conglomerate said Tuesday. The company, which emerged from bankruptcy late last year, has retained JPMorgan Chase and Evercore Partners as advisers.
