Cleveland Reader: 'Losing the Plain Dealer is Not an Option'

"For as long as I could remember, the Cleveland Plain Dealer has been part of my life. The words on the newsprint mean more to me than just ink on paper. I guess you can say my love affair with the Plain Dealer started when I was around 6 years old." Those are the opening lines of a poignant, powerful comment-essay from reader Lisa Roberson of Cleveland, responding to the Guild's Save the Plain Dealer campaign.

Happy Thanksgiving -- from 1968!

Guild members and their union brother and sisters take care of each other during strikes, especially during the holidays. Here's what the Guild Reporter said in 1968 about this photo: Two hundred of the families hardest hit by the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner strike receive the makings of a Thanksgiving feast from the Los Angeles Joint Culinary Board. Helping pack the boxes are, from right, William Robertson, strike-lockout director; Herman (Blackie) Leavitt, president of the joint board, and Gene Bufalino, international vice president of the Distilery Workers, which provided the finishing touch - bottles of wine in each Thanksgiving box.

Guild Anniversary Slogan Contest: Win 200 Bucks!

Calling all wordsmiths! We need a slogan to mark NewsGuild's 80th anniversary next year. Something punchy but meaningful. Something that brings to mind where we've been and where we're going. Something that reflects both our journalism and labor missions. We'll be using it on all our materials at next April's sector conference, and perhaps beyond. What's in it for you? A $200 check if you're the winner. Send your ideas to Guild Reporter editor Janelle Hartman at jhartman@cwa-union.org and/or post them on our Facebook page, www.Facebook.com/TheNewspaperGuildCWA. Deadline for entries is Friday, Dec. 14.
