Portland Guild ratifies two contracts

Members of the Portland Newspaper Guild at the Portland Press Herald and the Waterville Sentinel have ratified new contracts that expand the Guild jurisdiction, enhance labor-management cooperation and contain no wage or benefit cuts. The agreements come as Maine Today Media – the owner of the papers is restructuring in the face of a severe financial crisis.

Unions, union media have chance to fill communications void

The labor movement, and labor media, have a chance -- if they’ll take it -- to fill a void in trusted communications left by the decline in “old media,” the failings of “new media” and the timidity of the Democratic Party, according to John Nichols of the Nation magazine. Speaking at the International Labor Communications Association's annual meeting last week, Nichols took sharp jabs at present media while arguing that labor should embrace what he calls “next media.”
