Portland Guild Throws Well Deserved Party; New Hires Soon

‘Newspaper Workers Celebrate Bright Future’ sounds like the headline to an April Fool’s Day story. But the party that the Portland Newspaper Guild held Sunday was no joke. Guild members and their families gathered for lively, and at times emotional, celebration of the new investment that stopped Portland’s newspapers from going bankrupt, saving jobs and the union contract. Guild members in St. Louis were among a couple of dozen volunteers who spent Saturday gathering signatures for peittion drives the United Media Guild has voted to support: Efforts to cap sky-high interest rates on payday loans and raise Missouri's minimum wage by $1.

Dayton Guild to Represent Unified Cox Media Copy Desk

As Cox Media Group made plans last year to consolidate its newspapers’ copy desks, a manager hinted to Dayton Newspaper Guild President Lou Grieco that Dayton stood a good chance of getting the work – so long as the Guild would waive its representation rights.  “Thanks, but no thanks,” was the response. Quietly, strategically, Local 34157 stood its ground. Ultimately the company realized that its only Guild-represented newspaper was a high-quality, cost-effective choice.

Union Members Nationwide Standing with Verizon Workers

Guild members in San Francisco were among thousands of CWA and other union members across the country who rallied Thursday in support of a fair contract for Verizon workers, part of a larger fight to save and restore good, middle-class jobs in the United States.
